My next single is <i><a href=\"spotify:album:2nN6js3eQY8reU3NQS0oVl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Take Me Back to Odessa<\/a> <\/i>which was written as a last minute filler song a few days before for a recording session back in April due to a player cancellation. Originally I was dejected that we had to pivot but I often wonder if this song would have materialized without that alteration. I&#8217;m proud of the results which wouldn&#8217;t have been possible without all the inspired contributions on vocals from Leslie Sisson, Jonathan Nesvadba, Joel Nesvadba, Odie, &amp; P.T. Banks as well as Odie (bass), Ben Humphreys (drums), Phil McJunkins (pedal steel) &amp; Bill Baird (engineer &amp; lap steel). I faced some personal hardships compounded with being physically burnt out from nearly three months of touring + close to twenty performances that left me feeling empty and creatively lost. The break was a major mental re-shift for me and truth be told I didn&#8217;t miss being active online or on social media. In fact I am now looking for a new way to balance the marketing needed for my music happenings in a healthier way so I can create more. Before I get into the background story, I&#8217;d like to thank a lot of friends who helped bring this song to life. For starters, Garrett T. Capps brilliant vision in producing this song, Lucas Oswald for the killer mix, Bill Baird for engineering and his rad mic that made my vocals so warm, my bestie Kory Cook on drums, Odie on bass\/vocals and the legendary B.J. Cole (Elton John, Depeche Mode, R.E.M) on pedal steel. Thanks to Scott Langford for directing the video and to ALL my friends that came and volunteered their time to be extras at The Lonesome Rose. It warmed my heart and part of why I love San Antonio.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nR4czU7zp_o?si=JZI6E7Rz1sH16iqI\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">For those interested in the backstory &#8211; Rewind five years. During the fall of 2019, my career was on this exciting upward trajectory in which I was at the beginning of my opera composing career with three of my first immersive operas in three different cities, my first film exhibition, a symphony performing my music in Orlando and I was going to spend a week in Denmark at a castle for a composers workshop. But on the inside I was going through heavy heart ache related to a past relationship that lingered for years. I keep my personal life and feelings pretty close to the vest but after losing 50 lbs and my doctor telling me if I lost any more that it could jeopardize my organs I decided to reach out to my dear friend Shane. His advice was that I had to sit in my pain and face it. The months ahead were tough. I remember visiting my mom, being in her car as she backed out of her driveway, my sunglasses on, her asking if I was ok and trying hard to nod while holding back tears and then just completely losing it. I still choke up remembering that moment. She stopped the car, put her arms around me and didn&#8217;t prod. She just told me she loved me and that she would be there for me however I needed.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The beginning of 2020 was met with excitement. While I was still on my healing journey I knew the toughest hurdles were behind me. I felt raw and vulnerable but filled with positivity. Then when the pandemic hit I found myself alone and isolated in my home but I didn&#8217;t feel pain or loneliness. This is when I knew my journey in the fall was real. With so much time on my hands and no operas to prepare for, I picked up my guitar. I used to play daily for fifteen years and wrote songs all the time for my old bands but now my hands felt paralyzed. I kept playing daily to have fun and that&#8217;s when some songs started to develop. Out to Dance was my goodbye song. About letting go. Remembering where my heart was, accepting my feelings and not running from them. I choked up as the lyrics came into focus knowing I could channel the past without it sending me into a downward spiral. I wrote a few more songs early in the pandemic. Didn&#8217;t think much of them but thankfully I demo&#8217;d them. The last four years I&#8217;ve been producing operas all over the country but at the end of 2023, I started feeling really burnt out and creatively empty. I came across a hard drive that had those demo&#8217;s I made during the pandemic. I sent one to Garrett to see if he&#8217;d be interested in working with me to record it and I&#8217;m so happy he agreed. I wanted to be hands off and let Garrett have room to be creative. There was no rush which worked for both of our busy schedules. Over the spring we talked about the overall sound and approach and eventually went to track at Bill Baird&#8217;s studio. I realized how much I missed hanging out in the studio. It was so relaxed. Almost the complete opposite of the corporate feel of classical music and the opera world. We didn&#8217;t use a click and just tracked live a few times. I didn&#8217;t manipulate my voice like I did in my indie rock days. No overthinking. Over the next few months Garrett added layers of percussion, vocals and got B.J. Cole to play pedal steel.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">As a teenager, I used to rush home from school excited to practice guitar and even practice fifteen hours a day every summer but I lost that love when I started composing for films and classical music so it&#8217;s cool to rediscover it again, even if it&#8217;s in a small way. Coolest part of it all was getting to hang and become better amigos with Garrett and he&#8217;s down to record a batch of more of songs in 2025. Check out his music. Well I can&#8217;t really seem to find a composer that thinks the same way as I am thinking.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">I read on every damn composer&#8217;s site that they are an &#8220;award winning&#8221; composer and paint this picture of success. Then you listen to what they are doing and&#8230; <\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Well I&#8217;ve never won an award for anything besides a creative writing contest in high school that my journalism teacher entered me in, without telling me. I threw away the award.. <\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">And don&#8217;t get me wrong, I&#8217;ve definitely experienced some amazing things in life because of music so it really paid off to learn a few instruments! Although now people tell me that I have certain successes because of my personality? WTF! I guess I have my moments, because I certainly love people and I love listening to stories. I think I have my moments where I really connect with people because I&#8217;m also certain there is a list of people that would say my personality does not attract people but more-so turns them off. <\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Back to music&#8230;so eventually I learned that any ole&#8217; Joe can pick up a guitar. That&#8217;s why I hated playing guitar once I was in college. I needed a new fix. I hit the road touring the U.S. with my brother and best friends in a tribute to the D.I.Y touring culture of the 80&#8217;s. This was a blast and I highly recommend this to anyone coming out of college. Why get a job when you can travel, play music, get in trouble, have adventures and see all the unique pockets our country has to offer. After 3 or so years of this I started growing and transitioning into a cinematic sound and outgrew our little punk band. I started a large orchestral based band and eventually started composing for film and now symphony orchestra. It took around 8 years to make that transition and even now I&#8217;m facing new challenges. The challenge of academia. Maybe I&#8217;m too amateur? But it&#8217;s comparable to being in the twilight zone or in a bar of &#8220;independent&#8221; minded people all wearing the same black outfits. I mean, every composer I meet that has gone through the academic route in learning composition thinks, acts and sounds the same. They have to know this right? I even hear the same within film composing, in that the music or sounds that composers use have obviously been sampled and will eventually sound dated. <\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Maybe everyone has it figured out but I don&#8217;t? I&#8217;m still on the journey but maybe one day I can look back and truly answer that question. I hope with this blog, that someone else out there can benefit from what I have to say. Although I&#8217;m not really sure what I have to say. But who cares. It&#8217;s the wild wild west out there and the world keeps spinning. Someone else might have the deal or the money or the popularity but if you read between the lines I just described Milli Vanilli, Backstreet Boys, David Cassidy etc! Make the music and do everything yourself&#8230; <\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">I&#8217;ll rant here and there to keep things spicy. I tend to stick my foot in mouth but sometimes I&#8217;ll also try to be politically correct just in case I decide to run for president one day. Don&#8217;t expect perfect punctuation but do expect a ton of run-ons! I&#8217;m about producing and less about waiting until something is perfect. That&#8217;s why my family calls me the rabbit.
